Damien Rice Full Band is:
Damien Rice - guitar & vocals
Lisa Hannigan - vocals
Vyvienne Long - cello
Shane Fitzsimons - bass guitar
Tomo - drums, percussion

Notes: Mics in beanie about 12 feet from left stacks. Few technical issues with this performance. PA had an odd buzzing sound at times that was apparently due to a "phone" or at least that's what they must have said over the IEM as Shane kept mouthing/saying it. There was also some static from the PA (at least the left) later on in the evening. As with all full band Damien shows, levels are extreme. Volume has been slightly adjusted but major variations in volume are as they were at the venue. Pedestrian's opening set is also available. Never pay for or sell live recordings. If you have any questions or need more info drop me a line.

Compiled on 11.23.03

Many thanks to the taper and paulbaptiste for uploading this for me on the eskimofriends forum last year. This gig has the best version of Insane I've heard.

Rachael Yamagata - Live in Minneapolis (Nov 11) [flac]

A little gem of a recording here. Not only the first 2011 Rachael Yamagata gig to surface, but also a fantastic one. Great performance and hilarious banter and interaction with the audience.

My favourite quote of the night:

"I have to be careful in this age. I say too much, I show too much. People come up to me and they tell me the most intimate things and I'm like 'What the f*ck, dude?' and they're like "you blogged about it, bitch'"

Many thanks to Dan a.k.a. MN Gneiss for sharing this recording. Original notes and photos included in the folder.

Best of 2011

It's that time of the year. Well, almost. So here I am in a totally self-indulgent post as we reach the end of 2011 to summarize my favourite releases of the year and their stand out tracks. Call it a top 5 if you wish.

Laura Marling - A Creature I Don't Know

Known for: Sophia

Best song on the album: Night After Night. Great lyrics and haunting melody with just an acoustic guitar.

Rachael Yamagata - Chesapeake

Known for: Starlight, Even If I Don't

Best song on the album: Dealbreaker is a perfect closer but Stick Around is just pretty damn sexy.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Known for: The Death of You and Me, If I Had a Gun

Best song on the album: Torn between AKA... Broken Arrow and Stranded on the Wrong Beach. I'm gonna go with the first one.

Lisa Hannigan - Passenger

Known for: Knots

Best song on the album: Paper House. Fell in love with this song at first listen. And it's still my favourite on the album.

The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow

Known for: Barton Hollow, Poison and Wine

Best song on the album: I've Got This Friend. Beautiful harmony.

Tiny Desk Concert sessions

Let's talk about the Tiny Desk Concert series. I'm awe with them. How can such a simple concept be so wonderful? I suppose it has something to do with the musicians' charm and excellence. I mean, who wouldn't want to be in a small room and have a private showcase with someone like Josh Ritter or James Vincent McMorrow?
There's something amazing about these sessions that capture the best in music. It's simplicity, it's power and above all it's inherent quality, with nothing more than a guitar and a voice. And brilliant songs of course.

Here are a few of my favourites. Just click on the HD button, sit back and enjoy.

Josh Ritter
"The Temptation Of Adam", "Lark", "Rattling Locks" & "Kathleen"

Lisa Hannigan
"Knots", "Little Bird" & "Passenger"

James Vincent McMorrow
"This Old Dark Machine", "Sparrow And The Wolf", "Follow You Down To The Red Oak Tree" & "Red Dust"

The Civil Wars
"Barton Hollow", "Twenty Years" & "Poison & Wine"

Check NPR's Tiny Desk Concert youtube list for more great performances
